The campaign has been existing since 1964 and provides social and recreational opportunities to its members. Once a week seniors have the possibility to meet up in one of 10 so-called "Tagesbegegnungsstätten" (meeting centres). The groups are run and supported by volunteers. Today, the initiative has about 500 members in the city of Graz.

People who have to live in nursing homes are often excluded from society and social contacts. The only contacts they have are very often to professionals who take care of their bodily needs. Different scientific studies show, that due to lack of contact and activities diseases get worse faster. As soon as those people have regularly visitors depressions and dementia are less of a problem and increase slower. This is why it is important to the Volkshilfe Styria to provide social activities to all people who live in the 20 nursing homes in Styria. The visitors are volunteers who donate a part of their free time to socially excluded elderly people.

Megaphon-Uni. Education without Barriers

The MAGAPHON-University enables social disadvantaged people to obtain eductaion at university level by providing a series of lectured tailored to the needs and interests of the target group. All lectures are free of charge. The idea behind is \"the exchange of knowledge at the same level\" between professors teaching at university and socially disadvantaged (older) people.
Project to promote an intergenerational cooperation in public places (Park(T)raum – für ein gutes Miteinander)

“Park(T)raum“ is an intergenerational project with young social workers and older volunteers (mainly senior migrant citizens). Both groups supervise recreation parks in Vienna and provide entertainment to young children playing in the park. The aim is to form new coalitions across the boarders of generation and to strengthen intergenerational solidarity by integrating children, young adults, adults and senior citizens. In the first step, the project has been launched in two public parks in the 15th district of Vienna. The objectives of the project are:
- Promoting intergenerational contacts
- Promoting intercultural exchange
- Developing new kinds of entertainments (games, joint actions)
- Promoting mutual support and solidarity
- Raising awareness of the needs of the other groups
Furthermore, the project aims at building up cooperation between social services, child day associations, youth clubs and services for older citizens.
Promoting Healthy Ageing in Rural and Semi-Urban Communities in Austria (Lebenswerte Lebenswelten)

"Lebenswerte Lebenswelten für ältere Menschen" is a best-practice model of community-based health promotion for the elderly commissioned by the Austrian Health Promotion Foundation. The three-year-project's aim is to develop, explore and evaluate innovative approaches or policies for community-development and empowerment of elderly population groups to improve their health-related quality of life and participation in social activities. The project started in March 2003 in 13 Styrian communities located in two districts. These districts differ in two criteria: population income and percentage of elderly people.
Senior Talent Exchange Hard (Seniorenbörse Hard)

The senior exchange system of Hard was founded by two pensioners and is a local,non-profit exchange network in which all kinds of services can be traded. Neighbours and friends exchange services and time according to their individual facilities and knowledge. The kind of return service must be arranged between the participants.

The project covered the area of the province of Modena involving the Health services and the municipalities: it dealt with the setting up of a system able to forecast the heat waves and start up a support network in order to inform, monitor and assist older people both in their houses and in care centres.

The project carries out a shared regional planning with the aim of assessing the social sustainability of actions in favour of the current and future needs of the older people. In 2003, the "Heat Emergency" showed the need to improve the assistance to chronically ill people through an alarm system and the use of simple technology. The diffuse presence of our domiciliary care services gives us the possibility to report the danger of home accidents. The objective is to monitor our area trying to optimise the network of current services through technology (GIS, domotics…) and human resources (Caregivers, health and social workers, technicians, volunteers)

In 1/12/2004 in seven different Italian towns (Bresso-Milano; Bologna; Civitanova Marche-Macerata; Firenze; Roma, Eboli-Salerno; Palermo) this project started information help desk in the framework of already running social centres. These desks are meant for older people, their family members and their caregivers to favour the access to social services offered in the different areas. Specifically trained volunteers manage the Help desks: they have access to a user friendly ad hoc data-bank.

Elderly people may offer services to the Service Bank in exchange for money or different services such as: household equipment repair; minor home remodelling work; legal and psychological assistance (preparing documents for inheritance of land and property, debt collection, etc.); care and nursing; history expertise (cooperation with school teachers and students telling the story of the locality and its famous people); crime prevention in cooperation with the Police Department etc. (distribution of brochures, dissemination of information etc.); home-keeping and cleaning; garden keeping; looking after graves; short-term care of pets while their owners are away.

In this centre senior citizens could offer their help to single mothers and provide shor-time care of the kids. Older people have a possibility to share their life stories and experience, get satisfaction of being necessary, give young women a break to look for the job and advice them in many practical matters.
